Outdoor Play and Ideas to do with Kids in Lansing
I get questioned a lot from people out of state, “What do you do there?” “Isn’t it too cold to go outside much?” “It is so hot in the summer right?” I love responding to these questions because outdoor fun is what lots of Michiganders enjoy most!
Every Season has its wonder and as Michiganders we love to innovate to fit a need. Outdoor fun is no exception. We’ve compiled a list of fun family things to do outdoors in the Greater Lansing Area – a bucket list that we will continue to update. I love finding new and fun things to do and my most favorite part about that is sharing them with you!
Lansing Family Fun’s Top Picks for Outdoor Play and Fun
Water Fun – Pools, Beaches, and Splash Pads galore!
Car and Bus Races at Speedway Cheer the busses on or watch the crazy eights for a blast of a night.
Uncle Johns Cider Mill Enjoy watching cider being made, walking around the orchards, hay rides, bounching pillow, bounch houses, and more!
Fenner Nature Center Walk the trails or play in their welcome center. Their staff is delightful. Don’t miss the Maple Syrup and Apple Butter Festivals here!
Woldamar Nature Center Play at the outdoor nature park or explore in their welcome center. Afterwards, go hiking through the trails.
MSU Children’s Garden Center/Horticulture Center Story times, walks through the beautiful gardens, butterflies in the spring, and Christmas events in the winter are a few things you’ll love about this place!

Art/Drawing Marathon Eli & Edyth Broad Art Museum one of my favorite events during the summer. There are lots of stations for the kids and demonstrations that make this a great experience.

Biking You can do this with Rivertown Adventures as well!
Feed the Koi fish in their outdoor pond at Preuss Pets and visit all of the animals. This place is a dream. It’s so much fun to visit no matter your time frame to spend.
RC Track Race or go Disk Golfing at Grand Woods Park in their trails along the grand river.
Beacon Field If it’s not snowing, play a game of soccer.
Visit a garden:
Horses at MSU Rain or shine these beauties will always love a visit. You can bring apples and carrots to feed them. It’s a relaxing and awesome experience for both kids and adults.
Try something new and have a blast at High Ropes Courses in Howell, MI.

LCC Amphitheatre Performances These are such special events to attend. Enjoy sitting in Lansing’s city center during the warm summer nights taking in a great performance.
Lansing’s Concert in the Park Series There’s nothing like hearing beautiful music outside with the wind and sky as the backdrop. Make a plan to attend a concert and you won’t be disappointed.
Outdoor Movies This is a highlight of our summers! Bring a blanket, snacks, and cozy up with friends and family to spend some quality time in our community. Delicious food trucks line each location and every movie choice is great.
Drive In Movie I picture my childhood when I think of these. Whether it be in a movie or real life they are so dreamy. This is something your kids won’t forget.
Ski or snowboard at Mt. Brighton! I sometimes forget how close a ski trip really is. Just 45 min to the coolest family adventure winter has to offer!
Snowshoe or Cross Country Ski This is fun AND a workout! Take the family out for some fun QT at Fitzgerald Park and Lincoln Brick Park.
Ice Fish on Park Lake and if it’s not too cold out, play on the amazing three story play structure.
