Speaking of sweet treats, I may or may not sneak in a little “parent tax” when the kids are sleeping (aka taking a piece of candy or two for all my trouble).

Tell us – are you guilty too?!

The communities in the Greater Lansing have designated times to go trick or treating, so read on to find out what time you’ll be able to trick or treat in your area.

Halloween Candy Hacks

Finding new, safe ways to hand out candy to children on Halloween night has become a thing the past couple years since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

Some of these methods have actually stuck as cool traditions because they’re either easier for the homeowner or just plain fun for kids.

Here are some of the ideas we’ve seen around town for reducing germs and distributing candy in a new way.

Does your neighborhood use any of these ways to give out candy?

  • Sending candy down a chute to children on the sidewalk. And in style! Some of these contraptions are intricately engineered and beautifully decorated, making it not only a fun experience, but a safe one.
  • Homes on hills can shoot candy down decorated tracks or slides.
  • Hanging treat bags from trees for kids to grab and go.
  • Placing prepackaged candy on a table in the driveway for a self-serve setup.
  • Leaving a bowl of candy on the porch. Easy peasy, but you’ve got to trust that trick or treaters won’t take the whole thing!
