The Best Tubing and Sledding Hills Around Lansing, Plus Fun Tips You Might Not Know

Winter is Here which Means Sledding & Tubing Here We Come!

When the weather in Michigan becomes a bit frightful, put on your snow pants and enjoy it!

One of the best and most exciting ways to enjoy our inevitable wintertime is going sledding and tubing.

I don’t know about your kids, but my kids are ecstatic each year when the snow falls enough to finally go sledding. Waiting 9-10 months for this moment is a test in patience, yet makes the experience that much sweeter.

Sledding and tubing is a pastime that seems to never get old. Who doesn’t love flying down a hill, wind in your face, screaming all the way down?

We in Lansing are lucky to be surrounded by sledding hills of all kinds. There are bunny hills for the tiniest tots, favorite neighborhood hills tucked away out of sight, Burchfield Park with two hills to choose from and a cozy fire pit, and of course the highly sought after snow tubing run at Hawk Island.

Some places are BYOS (bring your own sled) while others having tube rentals.

Whether you’re looking for a quiet, less-known sledding option or if you are a “go big or go home” type of person, the Greater Lansing area has sledding and tubing that’s just right for you.

Reservations must be made to partake in this unforgettable tubing experience. Make reservations here.

Cost: TBD per person for two hours. There is also a vehicle entrance fee to enter the park.

Tip: Make sure your little one is ready for Hawk Island tubing. There is no age limit for children, however lap-riders are not permitted. All children must be able to ride down in their own tube, exit the lift area in a timely manner, and stand on the Magic Carpet.

The Magic Carpet (mechanical hill lift) makes it easy for little legs to get back to the top again and again.

For anyone needing a break from the cold, the warming shack is stocked with snacks, hot chocolate, and s’more supplies. Grab some to enjoy around the bonfires around the hill.

No snow? No problem! Hawk Island makes its own, so if all you see is grass (or that fun winter mud) in your backyard, you can always head over to Hawk Island for a winter wonderland.

Tip: You can rent the entire hill! If you have a party of 40 or more, the entire hill can be reserved by calling Hawk Island at 517-676-2233.

Tip: While you’re at Hawk Island, play on the playground, take a walk on the 1.5 mile paved trail around the park, adventure on the connected Lansing River Trail, and hike through adjacent Scott Woods Park.

Burchfield Park

881 Grovenburg Rd, Holt, MI 48842
(517) 676-2233

Burchfield Park in Holt, just south of Lansing, is one of our go-to winter tubing and sledding destinations, and bonus – the prices are great!

No reservations are required to sled at Burchfield Park. Tube rentals are available throughout the winter generally Friday – Sunday depending on weather conditions. Tube rentals are for two-hours for a nominal fee.

Tip: The tubing hill is sometimes opened on a weekday when there are school closures! Check their website or social media for updates.

There is a vehicle entrance fee to enter the park (but see our tip below about the annual pass).

Burchfield offers two sledding hills: a big one and a little one. The smaller hill is ideal for littles and is a hop, skip, and jump away from the parking lot. There you can bring your favorite sled from home and go down as many times as you like.

The big hill is for the more daring and is a short hike away from the parking lot. You may bring your own sled from home and sled for FREE anytime.

While you’re at Burchfield Park, cozy up by the wood-burning fire pit, grab a cup of cocoa in their winter snack bar when it’s open, and warm up in the winter warming lodge. Also take the family for a hike in the 6 miles of trails in the woods.

Tip: If you’re planning to be regular at Hawk Island, Burchfield, or other Ingham County parks, you might consider buying an Ingham County Parks season pass instead of paying the daily entrance fee each time. This annual pass is $35 for Ingham County residents and $45 for non-residents. The pass will also get you free parking at Potter Park Zoo.

  1. The Burchfield information is a bit wrong. Tubes are $3 per two hours. Moonlight ski is cancelled for just this year. Annual passes are $32 for resident. And I think the ski prices went up about .50 cents. See their website for accurate information.
