Are Lansing Families Trick or Treating in 2020?

Many of us never envisioned an October where we considered whether Halloween events would be canceled. And yet in 2020, COVID-19 has left many families questioning how to celebrate this fall.

We spoke with local municipality offices and the answer was clear: trick or treating is not canceled.

Halloween is not an official city-sanctioned activity, and residents can choose whether to participate. Local officials mainly want residents to stay safe this year, choosing what’s best for their families, and practicing guidelines from places like the County Health Department, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC. Based on this information, here are 11 easy ways to make it safer: Safe Trick or Treating in 2020.

For families planning to trick or treat this year, take a look at our listings below for dates and times and get those costumes ready.

Looking for other Halloween celebration alternatives? Keep scrolling to find a list of Halloween events and happenings around the Lansing area.

Not all communities set official dates and times. Please check back frequently, as we will add new information as it becomes available.

Halloween Candy Hacks

Many local communities have been brainstorming new techniques for distributing candy to reduce germs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some of their ideas:

Photo: Eric Davenport

  • Homes on hills can shoot candy down decorated tracks or slides.
  • Hanging treat bags from trees.
  • Prepackaged candy on a table out front.
  • Designated (masked) adult handing candy out individually to children, making it only one person having contact with the candy.
  • A socially distant Halloween egg hunt. Place a sign indicating how many eggs per visitor. This company sells a kit with prefilled eggs and a sign.
