MLK Day Kicks off the Start of Black History Month With Celebrations and Reverence

Discover the rich history of our nation, state, and the Greater Lansing Area by remembering, celebrating, and learning alongside your kids. It’s a meaningful way to honor the past while inspiring the future.

Not sure where to begin? Lansing offers a variety of museums and special events to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and celebrate Black History Month in 2025.

This February, take advantage of the many unique resources and events happening in our community to make MLK Day and Black History Month unforgettable.

Black History Month Honors How Far We’ve Come + Reminds Us Where We Need to Go

Though there is still progress to be made, Black History Month is a time for commemorating the ground that’s been covered through the hard work and sacrifice of those who’ve gone before us.

The song Dance for the Dead by Sareem Poems expresses this month of observance so eloquently in its chorus, “Dance for those that we’ve lost. Dance for those who paid the cost. Dance for those who gave their lives. Dance until we get it right.”

Here are some ways where we can “dance” (honor) this February in honor of Black History Month:

Ways to Participate in Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Black History Month

1 – Libraries

Local Libraries are committed to having MLK and Black History resources available.

Check with your local library to find out how you can get started!

Looking for a way to give back to the community? MSU is holding a book drive this month to “stuff the library” full of diverse reading material for local public schools.

2 – Family Friendly Movies

USA Today lists 20 family-friendly movies for Black History Month.

Pop some popcorn, sit down, and educate the whole family!

3 – Epic

Epic has online books for kids to learn more about African American History.

It is a great resource and a really fun way for kids to learn.
