Winter Break Ideas for Lansing Families

Woo Hoo! I’m so happy I could sing! 7 songs to be exact and all have to do with the fact that It’s Winter Break!

No more drop off lines in our jammies, early morning wake-ups, and homework for two whole weeks! Now – what are we going to do for 14 days in Lansing?

DEFY-foam-pit

I get super excited for the precious quality time I get to spend with my little gem but at the same time, I really need a plan for the weeks off of school. Can you relate?

Books, video games, and tv will have their moments to shine but I’m adding a few events, indoor play places, outdoor fun, and special outings to the mix as well.

My family can’t stop singing the Frozen 2 song, Into the Unknown, and many karaoke choices lately, so songs are on the brain inspiring this Lansing Winter Break Mix Tape of 7 Activity Ideas for Lansing Families.

01. Play Indoors

Inspired by: BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE (ELF // Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell)

It’s been in the teens the past few days and even if it warms up a bit – brrrrr it’s STILL cold outside. If warm indoor options are calling your name try these:

Nature Centers, Museums like Impression 5 and The History Museum, storytimes, Al!ve’s Treehouse for the kids and cafe’ for parents, Ice Skating at Munn Ice Arena, The Summit, and Suburban Ice, Jumping at DEFY and Springz (Half Price Tuesday) Zap Zone, just to name a few of these 34 Kids Play Places – Indoor Play for Lansing Families.

If you’re usually at work or the kids are in school during the Beaumont Tower Tours that take place on Tuesdays at Noon sharp, winter break would be great to check this off your bucket list. If you’re ok to climb stairs and aren’t afraid of heights, I can just about guarantee this will be a highlight to your winter break.

02. Play in the Snow and Outdoors

Fingers crossed we have some snow for the holidays and winter break. If we do get that fluffy cold blanket over our streets, let’s get outside and go sledding, skiing and cross country skiing, tubing,  play in our back yards, or in parks!

If snow is not in our winter break future, no worries. There are several other outdoor fun options around town in this list of 25 Reasons Winter is Worth Getting Outdoors for in Lansing.

03. Go to a Free Movie

Inspired by: LET’S GO TO THE MOVIES (Annie)

The CADL (Capitol District Area Libraries) has free movie times at their Downtown Location and sometimes at their other branches. You’ll find a link to their events on this post. Along with that, Celebration Cinema and NCG Cinemas are holding their film festivals with movie times each morning. Check the calendar to see what’s playing during the week.

04. Go on a Treat Trail (Donut Trail etc.)

Inspired by: ON THE GOOD SHIP LOLLIPOP (Shirley temple)

As if we haven’t had enough sweets for the holidays, right?! If you’re a sweet tooth no matter what the day, you may like going on The Donut Trail! Don’t miss a single spot by using the included map.

Other fantastic trails all Lansing treat connoisseurs should travel are these sweet options with a few places listed for each treat: Chocolate (Fabiano’s Candies, Fudge and Frosting), Popcorn (Cravings, Horrocks), Mochi (Oriental Mart EL, Horrocks, Kungfu Tea), Boba Tea (Momo, Ding, Kungfu Tea.)

05. Take a Fun Class and Learn Something New

Al!ve, Allen street Neighborhood, REACH, East Lansing LibraryFoster and Hannah Community Centers, have classes throughout the year and some drop-in classes run through winter break. 06. Take a Day-Trip to a Place You’ve Never Been Before

Inspired by: INTO THE UNKNOWN (Frozen 2)

Just because we aren’t going on a big trip for Winter Break doesn’t mean we can’t get away for a bit. My family is a huge fan of day-trips. My boys love being in their own beds at night and it’s nicer on the winter break budget not staying overnight.

If you don’t like to visit new places you’ve never been to before, we get it. Heading “Into the Unknown” can sometimes feel like anxious moments waiting to happen.

This is why we’ve got some great plan ideas for a FUN day with the family in a new place.

HERE ARE SOME FAMILY FAVORITE DAY TRIPS:

Detroit: Check out Belle Isle (FREE to visit), Outdoor Adventure Center, Great Lakes Crossing Outlet where you’ll find Peppa Pig World of Play, SEALIFE Aquarium, and LEGOLand, plus the FREE and lovely Winter In Detroit – Here are some highlights from our recent trip to Campus Martius, where Winter in Detroit is located.

Grand Rapids: From virtual reality experiences to Christmas light shows, GRKIDS has tons of ideas for you!

kalamazoo Valley Museum

Kalamazoo: We LOVE the Kalamazoo Nature Center, the Kalamazoo Valley Museum (FREE admission), and their several yummy coffee shops like Rose Gold and Fido. KZOOKIDS will hook you up with lots of other ideas, too.

Mid-Michigan-Children's-Museum Saginaw

Saginaw: This may just be my pick this time around as my kids have been asking to get back to the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum there. But, I hear the Saginaw Castle Museum is something to get excited about, too. If you go – let me know what you think!?

Plus, the Bay City State Park is just 20 minutes up the road and depending on how cold it is, hiking on the beach is invigorating and fun. Just remember to bring your warm gear and bundle up.

07. Go to a Winter Break Event

Inspired by: THE GREATEST SHOW (The greatest showman // Hugh Jackman)

Shows, Day Camps, Tumbling at Red Cedar, swimming, and the list goes on for Winter Break events and it may just be “where you want to be” as Huge Jackman sings in The greatest Showman.
