I love Lansing! One of the biggest reasons I can say that with pride is because of all the fun we’ve experienced in and around Lansing. After becoming a mom, I was overjoyed to find most of the things I remember doing as a kid are just as fun as an adult – and sharing that with my kids has been priceless.
So, when I say that these locations are great year-round things to do in Lansing, they’ve been tried and tested. Check out these things to do in Lansing for a great day out with your family:
Enjoy an art gallery:
Feed the fish in the outdoor and indoor ponds at Preuss Pets. It’s fun for ALL and just $1.
Check out the Turner Dodge House.
Visit Potter Park Zoo all year. Each season brings a new type of fun at the zoo. FREE for Ingham county residents on non-holiday Mondays from 9 AM -noon.
Go to the planetarium at MSU
Spend the evening at Al!ve and take a cooking class or a yoga, spa, or other wellness class.
Fly through the air at the High Ropes Courses in Howell. They are open year-round, but you’ll want to call ahead because they have some weather restrictions at times.
Play at one of our favorite parks and playgrounds. Many of these can be visited year-round by hiking their trails or utilizing other features.
Visit play. and do just that – play.
Explore a Nature Center: Each of these listed facilities are fabulous. They each have many interactive opportunities for kids and families year-round.

Walk the Lansing Historic Walking Tour and learn something new.
Go swimming inside
IM Circle Pool on MSU Campus.
Play at Jolly/Dunckel Road McDonalds located at 2530 E Jolly Rd, Lansing, MI 48911. FREE to play and fun for all ages.
Burn off energy at Taggart’s Playground inside the Portland Church of the Nazarine.
Run around and play a game of soccer at Beacon Field in Downtown Lansing or the Southside.
Take a walking tour of MSU.
Visit Brenke Fish Ladder in Old Town. Fun to see whether it’s flowing or frozen.
Play indoors at Castaway Play Cafe during the long winter months or to get out of the heat in the summer.
Skate with the kids at Edru Skate.
Climb and play at the Tree House in Chelsea.
MSU Union Building. Don’t forget to stop at the MSU Dairy Store located in the same building.
Swim and splash at Hawk Island in the summer or go tubing in the winter.

Fitzgerald Park Ledges and Trails
Go on a Mural Walk – updated in 2019 after Below the Stacks and now includes over 40 stops.
Axe Throwing – Bring your own food and drinks and have some interestingly different kind of fun in Lansing.

Tour the Fire Station in downtown Lansing. Call ahead to set up a trip.
Race at Grand Woods Park’s RC Car Track or go Disc Golfing in their trails along the Grand River.
Visit Allen Neighborhood Market year-round to find fresh produce and great artisan vendor finds.
Take a guided or self-guided tour of the Michigan State Capitol (Maps/Guides available at the info center), Michigan Justice Building, and Beaumont Tower. Every Tuesday from 12 – 12:30 the building will be open for tourists to walk up the 73 stairs to the top and watch the carillon player at work at the Beaumont Tower. You may get an opportunity to play a bell! Then, climb even further up to see the bells as they chime through campus.
